Posted Thursday, August 7th, 2014 by Sterling Volunteers Staff
Welcome to the latest edition of our partner spotlight series, where we highlight our regional partners and the notable efforts they are making to foster more and better volunteering within their communities and nationwide. Today we’d like to introduce you to one such organization that is making a difference in the southwest: HandsOn Greater Phoenix.
Since 1993, this local HandsOn Network affiliate has been encouraging Phoenix citizens to take action and create positive change in their community through service. Through their innovative programs, HandsOn Greater Phoenix actively engages community members of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels to help make a difference.
HandsOn Greater Phoenix’s Focus on Engagement
HandsOn Greater Phoenix mobilizes a wide range of volunteers through ongoing volunteer recruitment and by providing a variety of service opportunities for volunteers regardless of age and skill set. The organization offers service events at varying times and days of the week so volunteers can serve when it best fits within their schedules.
HandsOn Greater Phoenix has a number of volunteer programs that cater specifically to two groups whose skills are particularly valuable to nonprofit organizations: professionals and retirees.
Your Experience Counts is an academic mentoring program that places volunteers aged 50+ with elementary students in under-resourced schools to work on their math, reading, writing and science skills. Volunteers aren’t required to have prior teaching or mentoring experience, but are encouraged to use their accumulated personal and professional skills to help children succeed in and out of the classroom.
HandsOn Greater Phoenix also offers several opportunities for professionals of all ages to serve in areas where they have specialized skills or expertise. Skilled volunteering is a growing trend in the service sector, and HandsOn Greater Phoenix is proving to be on the leading edge as they connect skilled professionals with organizations that can benefit from their knowledge and experience.
Building a Community of Service in Phoenix
With more than 60 one-time service opportunities per month, large scale annual service events and a wide range of long term programs, HandsOn Greater Phoenix has created an effective and successful volunteer initiative that encourages civic engagement throughout the Phoenix community.
We are proud to partner with HandsOn Greater Phoenix and look forward to sharing more about their success in volunteering. To learn more about HandsOn Greater Phoenix, visit their website or connect with them on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.
